What TV commercial production covers
TV commercial production is the process of developing, filming and finishing an advert for broadcast and digital channels. For most UK brands that means:
- Creative concept and treatment
- Scripting and storyboards
- Casting, locations and pre-production
- The shoot, with a director and full crew
- Edit, grade, sound and final versions for each channel
Strategy 1: Agree one message before anyone writes a script
An advert has seconds to land one idea. Decide what the viewer should remember and what they should do next, then test every concept against that. Our iwoca commercial, made with Sidekick Studios, and George Ford x Tide both have business owners to reach, so the brief starts with the customer and not the feature list.
Strategy 2: Choose one big idea and commit to it
A clear idea is easier to remember than a list of benefits. Marelli's The Art of Motorsport builds a motorsport film around a dancer. The Sash Window Workshop moves between a window at home and the timber workshop behind it. Snug's Extreme Relaxing turns sitting on a sofa into a mock sporting championship. Each idea can be described in a sentence, which is a useful test for yours.
Strategy 3: Decide what a famous face is there to do
A well-known presenter or athlete should do more than appear. In George Ford x Tide, the rugby player is part of how the film gets attention for a business brand. Before you approach anyone, agree why that person fits, how much of their time you need, and where and for how long you can use the film.
Strategy 4: Plan for clearance before the shoot
Most UK TV ads are checked by Clearcast before they can be broadcast, and UK advertising is regulated by the ASA. Share any factual or price claims, and how you will support them, while the script is still being written. A change to a script costs far less than a reshoot.
Strategy 5: Shoot once for every screen
Most campaigns need more than one film. Write the shoot around the full list: the TV spot in its 30 and 10 second lengths, a longer online version, and vertical cuts for social. Framing for both shapes on the day is much easier than reformatting later, and the extra footage gives you more to work with for the rest of the year.
