What product video production covers
Product video production is the planning, filming and finishing of a film that shows what a product is, how it works and why it is worth buying. For most UK brands that means:
- A concept based on the product itself
- Studio or location filming with macro lenses and motion rigs
- Lighting design for each surface and material
- Motion graphics for features and specifications
- Cuts for your website, launch and social channels
Strategy 1: Study the product before writing the brief
Spend time with the product. Look at how it moves, reflects light and feels in the hand, then let that guide the film. The best shots often come from what the engineers are proudest of, so ask them. Send a sample early as well, so the crew can test it under the lights.
Strategy 2: Light for the material
Polished steel, wood, fabric and glass all behave differently under light, and a poor reflection can hide a fine detail. Our film of the Christopher Ward C60 Trident gets close enough to the dial and case that every reflection shows. Studio conditions give you control over them, along with cinema glass and motion rigs for precise moves.
Strategy 3: Give the product a world
A product on black shows its detail, while a setting explains why it exists. Linnet & Larsen focuses on the hands and tools behind the design. The same C60 Trident film cuts from the dial of a dive watch to rough sea, and BRM's watch film ties its watch to DKR Engineering's race car. Choose the world your customer wants to belong to.
Strategy 4: Show what the product does
A customer needs to know what the product will do for them. Motion graphics can explain what a lens cannot. Our Ruark Audio R2 MK3 film shows features like Spotify playback and multiroom listening alongside the product itself, so the benefit is clear without a long explanation.
Strategy 5: Plan the launch and the long tail together
A product film works hardest when it is planned with the launch. Agree the launch date, the cuts for each channel and any regional versions before filming: we recut the Yonex ad for a launch localised to Europe. Then plan how the footage will keep working on product pages and in retail once launch week is over. Our product launch video page covers filming the reveal itself.
